Eating the Rainbow – Why a Colourful Diet is Good for Dogs
Dogs, like us, naturally crave variety in their diets. It’s why we have created so many different flavors, formats and textures across the Billy + Margot® range.
To look and feel its best, and get vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants, it’s also important that your dog eats a variety of different ingredients. And just as with humans, the more colourful your dog’s diet, the better.
Here are some of colorful ingredients that make up Billy + Margot® products, and their incredible health benefits.
Often referred to as the superfruit, the blueberry is a rich source of vitamin K, manganese, vitamin C and copper as well as antioxidant, in particular anthocyanin. With a relatively low glycaemic index, blueberries offer a great source of fiber without significantly raising blood sugar levels. Blueberries are one of Billy + Margot®’s foundation superfoods.
Green symbolises growth and freshness, and is also the colour of kale – which you’ll find in all Billy + Margot® Dry Dog Food and Chilled Food.
Kale is a green leafy vegetable of the cabbage family and is rich in the antioxidants lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene which support your dog’s eye health, as well as quercetin and kaempferol, which are anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-carcinogenic. It is also a great source of vitamins C & K and a wide range of minerals, important for bone and blood health.
Turmeric has gained a lot of notoriety lately due to its fantastic health benefits. Used in all Billy + Margot® Dry Dog Food, turmeric is a bright yellow-orange spice and comes from the turmeric root. This spice contains a bioactive phytonutrient within it called ‘curcumin’, which has been used for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties for many years.
Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin A, C and some of the B vitamins. They also contain a storage protein called ‘sporamin’ which has potent antioxidant effects. . They are an excellent source of dietary fibre and can help to regulate blood sugar levels. Sweet potatoes are also one of Billy + Margot®’s foundation superfoods, so are in all of our completed and balanced food formats.
Included in our Dry Dog Food range, cranberries are an excellent source of antioxidants, including vitamins C and E. They are also a good source of manganese, which is necessary for enzyme and energy production in dogs. Their most notable effect is their ability to help prevent urinary tract infections, due to the potent antioxidant proanthocyanidin, which can help prevent certain bacteria (e.g. E. coli) from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract.
