What human foods aren’t safe for my dog to eat?

It’s incredibly tempting to share your human food with your dog, especially when they give you puppy-dog-eyes. However, there are foods that are not safe for your dog to consume. To help guide you, we’ve created a list of everyday human foods to avoid giving your dog. CHOCOLATE Ingesting even a small amount of chocolate can cause digestive, neurological and cardiac problems for your dog. This is because chocolate contains a theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs and dark chocolate is a higher risk. GRAPES, RAISINS & SULTANAS Grapes, raisins and sultanas are toxic to dogs in both raw and cooked forms. The active ingredient which causes the toxicity is not known, however they can potentially cause fatal kidney damage to your dog. CORN ON THE COB Dogs love to chew on corn on the cob, however dogs can eat the entire cob or large pieces of it. Unfortunately this can cause intestinal obstruction, a serious and possibly fatal condition that can require emergency surgery. COOKED BONES Cooked bones can be dangerous for dogs because they can splinter. When splinters occur, the sharp pieces can rupture your dog’s digestive tract. MACADAMIA NUTS Macadamia nuts are a popular snack in Australia, but they are also poisonous to dogs. The nuts can cause neurological problems for dogs such as weakness and tremors. CAFFEINE Dogs are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine than we are. The ingestion of any form of caffeine including tea, coffee, energy drinks and chocolate can cause severe poisoning in dogs. ALCOHOL Both the ethanol in beer, wine and liquor and the hops used to brew beer can cause dogs to suffer dangerous alcohol intoxication. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY DOG HAS EATEN ONE OF THESE FOODS? If you are concerned that your dog has ingested any of these foods, please contact your vet straight away. The earlier treatment begins, the better the chances that your pet will recover. WHAT SHOULD YOU FEED YOUR DOG INSTEAD? A dog’s nutritional needs are very different to ours, and there are specific nutrients that they need in order to prevent serious health problems.
